SJW Club Convention ‘07
How
many of you remember Al Albrightson’s sort of famous song “On
the Way to Cape May”. Next fall The South Jersey Wheelmen will be singing
that tune as we head down the Jersey shore to Cape May for our
annual convention. Al Jackson, his wife Billie, several other people and myself
(Gary
Pilling) are
working together
to plan an outstanding and interesting weekend. On Friday, I plan to lead a 20
or so mile tour of Cape May. I will take us to the Coast Guard Base, some historical
sites downtown and some nature sites. We will try to get people together for
diner at a restaurant within walking distance of our hotel. Al is mapping out
two rides for Saturday, a longer “B” pace ride and a shorter “C” pace
ride. That evening we will all go to diner at a local restaurant. Later, we’ll
have a little get-to-gather / meeting in one of the hotel’s meeting rooms.
To add a little fun we will hold a raffle for some small “Cape May” items.
Sunday we will have a short ride to several of the birding hotspots of Cape May.
We will have access to the pool locker room for clean up before you head back
home.
We will be staying at the Grand Hotel of Cape May which is located across from
the beach. It is a very pleasant hotel with a good restaurant and a VERY nice
indoor pool. The restaurant has an outstanding breakfast buffet for $8.95 plus
tip and tax. (Breakfast will be on your own, separate form the hotel cost. They
do NOT have a free continental breakfast.) Cape May as you know is famous for
its wonderful Victorian homes, its antique shops and a variety of interesting
restaurants. You may NOT know that Cape May is one of the premier bird watching
spots in the US. It is home to at least three NJ Audubon Society centers plus
a Nature Conservancy center. There are several nature areas where you can see
many local birds and sometimes hundreds of migrating birds on their way to their
warm summer homes. We will take you to some of these nature areas on our Sunday
ride. If possible we will try to have some binoculars on hand to do at least a
few minutes of bird watching. Oh, did I mention the beach and ocean. Right across
the street from the hotel is the excellent Cape May beach just waiting
for some playful daytime fun or a romantic evening stroll.
Cost, including tax, is $128 per room per night, $256 total
for the two nights. The above cost is for two people, a third person in the room
is $15 extra. All
payments will be paid through the club. Full payment of $256 must
be made by the September 5th club meeting. All checks made to: South Jersey
Wheelmen.
